Greta & Frannie - Together Again!

As you can see, Greta is taking full advantage of the recreational facilities since arriving home.

Here is a photo of the collar I bought for Greta at the Celtic Festival, the day I picked her up. I took her purple collar off of her to test fit this one. After the test fit, I had to remove the new collar to adjust it, and as soon as it was off Greta's head, she immediately stuck her nose back into it.

After I readjusted the collar it was still too tight, so I had to pull it off of her to adjust it, and she again stuck her nose into it, wanting me to put the collar back on her. I put the new collar on her and finished adjusting it while she was wearing it, and she' been happy ever since.

Greta is exploring the backyard-prarie garden. We had a lot of snow, and rain, so the backyard is quite lush. I discovered that Greta, like many greyhounds, likes to be covered up for naps on coolish afternoons and evenings. This is the classic one-ear alert nap.
Some greyhounds smile. I caught Greta smiling earlier, but didn't have a camera handy. I managed to catch this not very good picture of a later smile with my camera phone. Greta is seen here enjoying a quick nap before hitting the sack for the night.

I took Greta to the park to let her run and did manage to get one decent video of her running.

Greta and I went to visit Michelle & Mell's greyhounds, Promise and Autumn. Promise is a 87 lb. red brindle male and Autumn is a 67 lb. red brindle female. Everyone got alone very well including a game of tag in their backyard.

Greta and I visited with the other local greyhounds at the GPA-New Mexico Greyhound Connection Meet and Greet at the Petco on Cerillios Blvd. in Santa Fe. We had a great time and met many pet owners and let them know what great doggies greyhounds are.

Of note, there was a wolf in attendance (outside) that we were advised to avoid and one poor little black lab who nearly suffered a heart attack seeing six greyhounds and people. I later talked to the lab's owner and she said that he's a rescue who is afraid of people, not other dogs. Here's some pics of the attendees.
Michelle Smithour is seen here handing out brochures to some new greyhound admirers.
All the pretty doggies in a row. Luckily there was one non-brindle greyhound to prove that they do come in other colors.
Well, almost everyone is looking at the camera.

Here's a couple of videos I shot of Greta that reveal the secret to her speed; a propeller tail!
Left: This video was shot on May 28th. In the video, you see Greta slips while trying to turn sharply at the stick I had thrown, and lands on top of her right front leg. The little yelp you hear is her stepping on it the first time. She was okay in a minute, but we didn't run her any more just in case.

Middle: I found this video on one of the "nanny-cam" videos that I shot of Greta while I was at class. I've seen her spin her tail like a propeller when we're getting ready for walks.

Right: This video is a different day, and Greta shows us from a different angle that she can spin her tail both directions. Talented girl.

Greta's California Vacation

After Dan arrived, we drove into Santa Fe so that Dan could pick up a chin strap for his hat.

We took Greta for a walk on one of the trails in my neighborhood. She is in full alert mode.

Greta is her normal relaxed state.

Here's another full alert mode pose.

I Dream of Jeannie...Dan caught this shot when Greta's ears are nearly back to back.

Still searching for something to chase.

Waiting very patiently.

Here's a photo of Greta and me with the valley in the background.

Big rock.

Dan took these series of photos during one of our gas stops. He said that Greta tracked me like, well, a hound. Click here to watch the video.

Indian Village (tourist trap). Note the sign on the wall indicating the altitude.

These photos were taken at the Continental Divide in New Mexico.

Dan in front of the camera.

We saw this coyote near the JMRC Flyers field aboard Camp Pendleton. Just prior to this photo, the coyote caught and ate breakfast.

He saw Greta eyeing him, and decided to keep walking.

Going, going, gone.

Greta is seen here enjoying the fireworks. This was the "stay on the dock" gang; Prescilla, Greta, me and Rosalyn.

While in California, we visited with Emma and her Whippet, Daisy, and IGs Oliver (seen above) and Stitch. Emma has taught Daisy to crawl.

We hit a traffic jam on I-40. Seemed like a good time to walk Greta.

Coming back from the highway sojourn. Note the Jail in the background.

Greta was a real trooper during the trip. We discovered that she was actually sleeping in this position. In these videos, Greta is seen trying her hardest to stay awake.

Back from California and enjoying her first raw meal.

A happy girl enjoying her post-raw meat euphoria.

What a smile!

Frannie Comes Home
I received an email from Greta's foster dad, Glenn telling me that he had Greta's sister Frannie was with him and would be at the Meet & Greet on Saturday. I knew that Frannie was coming available, but wasn't sure of the timing. I decided to take Greta to meet her sister today. We spent a couple of hours with Frannie; first just her and me, and then with Greta.

Frannie has nearly the same temerament as Greta, but calmer (if you can believe that) and a bit shyer. She appears willing to follow Greta's lead when meeting new people, but is friendly if approached and good with people and kids of all ages. Get the tissues, ladies.

At the end of the M & G, I had a moment alone with Frannie and asked her if she wanted to come home with us? She lowered her head and cuddled into my chest. I then got a moment alone with Greta and asked her if we should take Frannie home? She gave me a few licks on the chin or what I call "greta-kisses." How could I refuse?

Frannie rode great on the way home, even taking a sip of water enroute. Since getting home she and Greta are getting along well. Frannie does the same pointie ears as Greta, and seems even more versitile with her ear magic. Unlike Greta, Frannie wolfs her food, has a slight overbite, a dislocated right front toe, snores when she sleeps, and smiles too! Frannie is a bit taller than Greta. Her racing weight was 66 lbs. versus Greta's 62 lbs. Like Greta's first day, we enjoyed our first thunderstorm together and it was a real snooze fest. Yay!

More pictures of Greta and Frannie
Here's the latest photos of Greta and Frannie. As you can see, they're getting along great. Frannie is becoming more attached to Greta every day, and seems to like using her for a pillow. I managed to get a photo of Greta and Frannie doing their pointie ear thing together.

There are a couple more smiles out of Greta and a few smile of Frannie; my buck-toothed beauty. ;-) Actually, overbites are fairly common in greyhounds.

Pictures of High Desert Greyhound Fiesta and Reunion Picnic

This is Greta and Frannie's brother, Charlie.

Here is Charlie with Frannie.

Greta, Frannie and Charlie doing their best to not look in the camera.

Greta and Frannie visiting with new friends.

Greta, Frannie (hiding behind post) and Charlie's butt.

Greta being shy.

Mummy contest.

The idea is to wrap your greyhound in toilet paper, if you can.

If you tear the paper, you have to start over from the beginning.

And the winner...The doggie on the right (don't know her name). She was an absolute statue during the contest; didn't move a step.

Some random photos of the picnic.

More random photos. One came in costume.

Greta relaxing in the shade.

Greta (partially hidden), visiting with friends.

This little girl was a track accident (unknown daddy), so she couldn't be raced. She was pretty nervous and foamed at the mouth a lot.

Frannie with the nervous one.

There was some sort of greyhound party going on behind the container. They seemed to come and go from there continuously.

More random greyhounds.
This was my first greyhound gathering and it was a unique experience. There were about 20 greyhounds present, but no barking, growling, fights, etc. When a new guest arrived at the gate, the greyhound(s) outside was just as anxious to get in to meet the group as the group was to meet the new greyhound(s). The image of three new greyhounds being swarmed by 6-8 greyhounds at the gate, with Greta right in the thick of it, doing her best to wiggle in for a smell, is a sight to behold.
